Professor Emeritus – Department of Communication, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland USA

The MMComm at Trisakti University has had a successful 10 years preparing professional communicators for careers in strategic communication management and public relations. The program recognizes the importance of management skills for professional communicators. The major elements of the excellent practice of public relations are embodied in the program—elements identified in the study of excellence in public relations and communication management that I directed from 1984-1992 in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom—and which has been repeated in many other countries. This research shows that public relations creates value for organizations and society through relationships and that public relations is most valuable when it is managerial, strategic, symmetrical, diverse, integrated, socially responsible, ethical, and global.

Today, the world in which public relations is practiced is changing rapidly and dramatically for companies and other client organizations. Yet, the characteristics identified in the Excellence study and emphasized in the MMComm remain fundamental and more essential than ever. I am proud to be a member of the advisory board of the program and greatly impressed by the quality of its faculty members and students. My best wishes for the future success of the degree program.

As an academic who has watched Indonesian public relations and corporate communication education grow over the past 10 years I have had an opportunity to help in that growth through work done by Dr. Elizabeth Ananto. As a board member of MMComm and a frequent participant in the Public Relations Week Indonesia and International Public Relations Summit, I have observed how sophisticated Indonesian public relations education and practice has become. In particular, I am impressed by the focus on research – both qualitative and quantitative – in setting baselines and benchmarks that have measurable and behavioral objectives to be met in the campaign.

Based on the curriculum designed by Dr. Ananto and her colleagues, students and professionals receive a world-class education in the theory, measurement, method, analysis, and finally, evaluation. Seeing over the years how responsive the Indonesian public relations professionals are to further education I expect nothing less in the next 10 years under Dr. Ananto’s direction at MMCom and EGA briefings.

It is very exciting that Masters of Management in Communication at Trisakti University is celebrating its 10th anniversary. It is a pleasure to be associated with a program that has such a strong focus on the strategic aspect of communication and treats it properly as a management function.

Today, reputations are a critical, intangible resource for corporations, governments, and NGOs. Reputations are an important driver for stakeholders react to and interact with organizations. Issues management and crisis communication are essential elements of reputation management. Issues management allows communication managers to see problems early and to consider how the organization might address the problems. Effective issues management can improve an organization’s operating environment and enhance its reputation. Moreover, issue management can help to prevent crises. All crises present an element of threat to organizational reputations. Crisis communication provides strategic guidance on how communication can be used to protect reputations that are under threat. Reputation management, issues management, and crisis communication are interconnected like strands in a rope.

It thrills me to see how the Masters of Management in Communication honors the role issues management and crisis communication. Congratulations to Elizabeth and all the students and alumni associated with the program.
